Despite being such a well-kept secret, Vieques is actually very easy to get to -- in addition to the options of private/chartered flights & private/chartered yachts, there are numerous daily direct commercial flights scheduled from San Juan, on the main island of Puerto Rico.

The Vieques Airport is located less than 15 minutes away from Casa Cielo and has a paved runway just over 4300' long.

The Ceiba Airport, located on the Puerto Rico mainland, is just eleven miles from Casa Cielo and can handle very large jets with its 11,000’ paved runway. Fuel, repair services and hangars are available there.  It is a five minute helicopter trip from Ceiba to Vieques.

Puerto Del Rey Marina is located ten miles from Vieques on the main island.  It is the largest marina in the Caribbean and offers extensive facilities for yacht owners.  There is a heliport at Puerto Del Rey, a five minute trip from Vieques.  Esperanza Harbor, which  can be seen from the pool deck of Casa Cielo, is a ten minute drive from the villa.  It is frequently visited by super yachts from around the world.

How to Get to Vieques

Many visitors remark that Vieques is reminiscent of St. Barth's 20 years ago....and indeed quite a few celebrities do enjoy unwinding & relaxing on Vieques, away from the glare of the spotlight and the intrusion of paparazzi.

Vieques is an adventurer's paradise, offering a myriad of activities such as hiking, biking, kayaking, paddle-boarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, and horseback riding.

Other wonderful ways to explore the island and surrounding waters include boating, body surfing, jet skiing, camping, surfing, skeet shooting, fishing (for wahoo, mahi, tuna, marlin, bonefish, etc), kite-boarding, and windsurfing.  Or simply stretch out in a hammock and revel in the quiet beauty of the sun, sea, sand, and breezes.  When hungry or thirsty, head to one of the island’s fabulous restaurants or sip away the afternoon in an open-air bar by the water.

There is a very vibrant art scene on Vieques, with a number of local galleries and all different kinds of artists calling the island home -- painters, sculptors, photographers, videographers, potters, jewelers, fused & mosaic glass artists, woodworkers, etc.

Articles about upcoming events, activities, art shows, restaurants, island history, and other special features are found in the Vieques Insider Magazine, published quarterly & always eagerly anticipated by locals and visitors alike.

Things to Do

Because it is a territory of the United States, no passport is required for US citizens and there are no customs or immigration stops to deal with at the airport.  The currency is US Dollar and, though the official language is Spanish, most residents speak & understand English.

Voted “Best Caribbean Island” by Travel & Leisure in 2012, and in their top 10 of "Most Romantic Islands of the World" in 2013, two-thirds of Vieques remains pristinely undeveloped & wild horses frolic on the beaches. Comprised of two separate sites on the island, with a total of almost 18,000 acres, the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest and most ecologically diverse wildlife refuges in the Caribbean. In addition to the horses, it is home to many types of sea turtles, tropical birds, fish, flowers, manatees, etc....a number of the animals & plants protected in the Refuge are endangered species.

Vieques (pronounced "bee-ay'-kess") is a low-key, chic island paradise located seven miles off the eastern tip of Puerto Rico.   It is 21 miles long and about 4 miles wide -- ringed with dozens of breathtaking unspoiled & secluded white sand beaches, the turquoise water of the Caribbean lazily lapping the shore.  The most intense bioluminescent bay in the world, located on the south coast of Vieques, must be experienced to be believed…..once the sun sets, the bay comes alive with incredible displays of captivating brilliance.
